Lightcast's job seniority classifier categorizes postings based on indications that the requirement is for a senior or a junior applicant. These postings are flagged as "Junior" or "Senior", with all remaining postings categorized as "Intermediate", which can be regarded as unspecified. Indications can include the wording of the job title, or specific phrases within the job text.
For any given job title, or occupation, the characteristics of postings categorized as "Junior" or "Senior" can be compared to the baseline characteristics of all the other postings in that cohort.
The skills required to perform in a particular role are likely to vary depending on the required seniority of the role. It is important to understand the differences in skill requirements between junior and senior versions of the same role, in order to fully understand how a person can advance in that role - Develop their skills and their career.
Note: It is important to note that the classifier is currently only available in data share products and values accuracy over recall - All postings tagged as "Senior" or "Junior" are correct, but not all senior of junior postings will be tagged. This will improve over time, but for the initial release it was deemed essential that the "Senior" and "Junior" tagged postings not include any noise from false positives.
